The Gate Lodge is a 2 bedroom holiday cottage at the entrance to Bamff estate with an enclosed private garden. It was beautifully refurbished in 2016. The cottage sleeps 4 and is a comfortable and charming place to stay and ideal at any time of year. The cottage is available for short breaks – half weeks, and week-ends – even single nights. Please arrive after 4pm and leave by 10am. If you want to order in shopping or meals please ask advice.

There is one double room and one bunk room. The sitting room has wood burning central heating (with electrical back-up). It has a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower over bath. The furniture and fittings include pieces of antique and vintage character. Linen and towels are provided. All logs for the Gate Lodge are now also provided free of charge to encourage you to heat the cottage the green way!

There are many lovely walks in the area of all lengths, but you can start by walking up the drive to the castle, through natural woodland filled with small pools created by dam-building activities of the Bamff beavers. Some of the best beaver wetlands in the UK are within yards of the cottage, and many water loving species – such dippers, ducks, herons, frogs and otters may also be seen.

Equally you can head off to enjoy one of the many activities in the area, from golf to castle viewing, or just relax in the cottage or garden and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Note to dog owners:

Bamff estate is both a rewilding project and farm – in all areas there are roaming livestock and dogs must therefore be kept on leads at all times, except in any self contained garden belonging to the holiday accommodation.

The Gate Lodge is on the Cateran Trail, featured in Observer Magazine’s 10 best long-distance walks in UK. We can arrange transport to and from any other sections of the trail.

Nearby is the Scottish Woodland Skills Centre where many interesting courses are available.

If you would like to see the Bamff beavers, please let us know in advance to arrange a guided walk. You can also book tours of the wildland project.

The Wildland walks for guests are £40 per accommodation unit. The walk  takes approximately 2 hours and happens during the day, usually starting  at 10 am or 3 pm. The guide – normally a family member – will take you round some of the Wildland area and explain our rewilding project. You will learn where the beavers live and what they eat and see many dams and other impacts.

The beaver watch walk is £30 per unit of accommodation. It takes place in the evening, usually around 8 pm.  From April to September there is usually a good chance of seeing beavers.

“We LOVED our visit! Such a wonderful cottage and location. The enclosed garden was perfect for our dogs, and we enjoyed some great walks along the Cateran trail. The pictures don’t do it justice. What a gem – can’t wait to visit again!” Cara – Booking.com, 2019

“Beautiful authentic gate house on an amazing plot with lots of walks to have. House has everything you need and could have stayed another week.” Tina – Airbnb.co.uk, 2019
